Salve,

Scusi, non parlo Italiano.

I have a CX 2500 Prestige automatic, injection, with 231,000 km. The car is in great condition.

On a long drive last week the engine stopped running on the autostrada, maybe ignition problems. Restarted and the engine sounded a bit rough, temperature higher than normal (above 95 degrees). For the first time in almost 100,000 kms I had to add a liter of engine oil.

Then the automatic ZF gearbox still works well in Drive, but when putting it in reverse you feel it in the car (it kind of shakes the car). Last oil change some 60,000 kms ago - most people advise not to change the oil as gearbox oil is very aggressive and may loosen particles, which in turn, may damage the gearbox.

What are your experiences regarding the life of a 2500 injection engine?

What are your experiences regarding the life of a ZF three-gear automatic gearbox?

If a revision is necessary, where should I do this? Any idea of the cost? I heard that some small tubes and parts of the gearbox cannot be ordered anymore from ZF, is there a specialist that still has those parts? I live in the Milan area. Heard the name of Enrico Vertuani, and visited Garage Tonino in Agrate Brianza, near Bergamo. He has a few SMs, DSs, but no CXs.

Mille grazie for your responses,

hmcl

The complete replacement of automatic gearbox is very expensive, about 4000 euros.
For this reason agrees to change the oil at least once every two years to avoid major damage.
Enrico Vertuani is a great expert in the 2500 engine and automatic transmission, he works very well but is certainly not cheap!!

I have a 2500 GTI automatic.
IMPORTANT: The engine does not pose great problems, but each approximately 40,000 km you must register (settled) valves! Not settled themselves like modern engine!

And every 5 years you have to replace flywheel sensor (in italiano "captatori").

hmcl

Thank you. The flywheel sensor has been replaced a few times, the valves were checked with a 60,000 km interval and needed no adjustment (!). The radiator, hoses, alternator, electronic ignition, cables, spark plugs, all that has been replaced - imagine my surprise when the engine sputtered and stopped running on the highway, some 20 kms after the Gothard tunnel.

Thanks.

I'm from Holland, and just moved to Bergamo for work. Bought the CX in the Netherlands from the first owner in 1993, and parked it in a garage most of the time. When studying, I worked at a Citroen dealer as a part-time sales rep. I know a thing or two about the CX, but am not a mechanic. Fixed the drooping ceiling myself, but anything beyond spark-plugs, oil changes, and tires I rather leave to a specialist.

Haven't yet decided whether to keep the car in Italy or drive it back eventually - in Holland for instance the tax man will visit you when a car with a foreign license plate is in one location for too long a time. Wonder how that would be in Italy...

Am about to start an intensive course in Italian, and so I hope future posts will be in Italian.

Saluti,

Cesio74: Thanks for your response. Where did you have it overhauled, and what was the cost? Sorry, but not interested in buying another CX - mine is perfect apart from the engine and gearbox. Maybe one day a Prestige Turbo... We'll see.
